TL;DR: How to Start a Mom Blog and Make Money (Step-by-Step Guide)

Starting a mom blog in WordPress takes a few focused steps, from picking your niche to earning your first income. Here’s what the process looks like:

  1. Choose a niche and blog name — Pick a focused topic and a domain name that reflects it.
  2. Set up hosting and WordPress — Get a hosting plan, register your domain, and install WordPress in one click.
  3. Customize your blog design — Choose a theme or use SeedProd to build a custom design without code.
  4. Install essential plugins — Add SEO, analytics, security, and backup plugins before publishing.
  5. Create consistent content — Build content pillars and a publishing calendar to stay on schedule.
  6. Promote your blog — Use social media, email marketing, and SEO to grow your audience.
  7. Monetize your blog — Earn through affiliate marketing, display ads, sponsored posts, and digital products.

You’ve got stories to share and a life worth writing about. But every guide you find assumes you already know what platform to use, what hosting means, or how WordPress even works.

I’ve been writing about WordPress for over 13 years, and I’ve helped plenty of bloggers, including moms, get their first site live without wasting money on the wrong setup.

This guide walks you through how to start a mom blog in WordPress step by step, from picking your niche to making money from home.

Why Use WordPress for Your Mom Blog?

If you’re starting a mom blog, your first question is probably: how do I choose a blogging platform?

For me, the answer is simple: WordPress is the best option. It powers over 43% of all websites on the internet.

One thing to know before you start, is there are two versions of WordPress.

WordPress.com is a hosted service with limited features and restricted monetization options. WordPress.org is the self-hosted version you install on your own hosting account. It gives you full ownership of your site and unlimited options to earn money. This guide covers WordPress.org.

Here’s why it’s the right choice for mom bloggers:

FeatureWordPress Benefit
OwnershipIt is 100% yours. You own your data.
MonetizationUnlimited options. Keep all your earnings.
CustomizationThousands of themes to choose from.

So, if you want a blog that’s easy to manage, can be optimized for search engines, and offers plenty of support, WordPress is the best blogging platform for you.

1. Choose a Niche and Blog Name

Before you dive into starting a mom blog, let’s talk about what your blog will be about. Choosing a niche helps you focus your content and attract a specific audience who shares your interests.

Look at a mommy blog like “The Eco-Friendly Family.”

The Eco Friendly Family mom blog homepage showing eco-conscious parenting content

They zeroed in on eco-conscious parenting, offering tips on sustainable living, green products, and raising environmentally aware kids. This focused approach helped them build a loyal following of parents who value the same things.

Choosing Your Mom Blog Niche

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Popular niches: Parenting hacks, recipes for picky eaters, homeschooling tips, budget-friendly family activities.
  • Unique niches: Traveling with kids who have special needs, minimalist parenting, raising multilingual children, eco-friendly toy reviews.

Take some time to explore what topics excite you and have growth potential. You can use tools like Google Trends to see what people are searching for online.

Picking the Perfect Blog Name

Once you’ve chosen your niche, it’s time for the fun part: naming your blog. A good blog name should be catchy, memorable, and relevant to your niche. It’s also important to check if the domain name (that’s the website address) is available.

Need some inspiration? Here are a few real-life mommy blog names that hit the mark:

Collage of mom blog name examples including Swaddles n' Bottles and The Realistic Mama
  • Swaddles n’ Bottles: This blog focuses on the newborn stage, offering tips and advice on everything from feeding to sleep schedules.
  • The Realistic Mama: This blog takes a down-to-earth approach to motherhood, sharing honest stories and relatable experiences.
  • Mom on Timeout: This blog offers a fun escape for moms with recipes, DIY projects, and parenting humor.

If you’re stuck, try combining keywords from your niche with words like “mama,” “family,” or “adventures.” Get creative and have fun with it.

After choosing a blog niche and name, you can start setting up your mom blog.

2. Set Up Your WordPress Blog

The first stage in setting up a WordPress blog involves choosing a hosting service and domain name.

Think of your blog as a house. You need land to build it on, right? That’s where web hosting comes in. It’s like the plot of internet land where your blog will live. And just like a house needs an address, your blog needs a domain name so people can find it.

For mommy bloggers, Bluehost is a great choice for both hosting and domain registration. It’s affordable, easy to use, and even gives you a free domain name for the first year.

Even better, you can install WordPress with just one click. Their helpful support team is available 24/7 and offers free SSL certificates to keep your site secure.

You can also check out our guide on the best WordPress hosting providers to explore other options and find the best fit for your blog.

Setting Up a Blog with Bluehost

For this guide, I’ll walk you through setting up your blog with Bluehost. If you choose a different hosting service, it’s best to check their documentation for specific setup instructions.

To start a blog with Bluehost, click this link to visit the Bluehost website and click the Get Started button.

Next, you’ll be asked to choose a pricing plan. Select the option that best suits your needs and continue.

Bluehost Pricing options

After picking your plan, it’s time to choose a domain name. You can either create a new domain or use an existing one.

Set up a domain name with Bluehost

If you don’t already have a domain, choose to Create a new domain and type the mommy blog name you chose in step 1 in the text box. Then, click Next to continue.

Now, enter your account information and select your account plan.

Bluehost package information

Next, you’ll get an email with your hosting login details. After logging into your Bluehost dashboard, navigate to the My Sites tab, click Log into WordPress, and enter your login information.

Install WordPress on Bluehost

After logging in, click the Create Site button.

Create a site in Bluehost

You’ll now see Bluehost’s WordPress installation wizard, which asks you to name your website and choose an optional tagline. Then click Next.

Name your WordPress website in Bluehost

On the next page, select your domain name from the drop-down menu. Leave the directory blank, as Bluehost will choose it for you, and then click Next.

Choose your domain name in bluehost

The WordPress installation process will now begin, which could take a few minutes. When WordPress is installed, you’ll see the following success message:

This page will also show your website details, and you’ll also get an email confirmation with a link to your WordPress site’s admin area.

Now that you’ve set your blog’s foundation, it’s time to make it look as good as your content.

3. Customize Your Blog Design

It takes people around 50 milliseconds to form an opinion, determining whether they’ll stay or leave your website. If your blog isn’t attractive and engaging, people won’t read it, so it needs to look as good as or better than the other mommy blogs out there.

You won’t need a designer to get there.

WordPress offers thousands of free and premium themes to give your blog a unique look and feel. Choose one that aligns well with your blog niche and is clean and simple, highlighting your blog content.

For example, Astra, a fast, lightweight WordPress theme, has many blog starter designs you can easily tailor to fit your blog. For more options, see our picks for the best blog WordPress themes.

Blog Branding Basics

Before you pick colors and fonts at random, spend 10 minutes on a simple brand plan. It will save you a lot of backtracking later.

Choose 2-3 colors that reflect your blog’s personality, such as soft neutrals for a lifestyle blog, or bright tones for a family adventure niche. Pick one heading font and one body font, and stick to them across every page. Then, create a simple logo using Canva or a logo generator; it doesn’t need to be elaborate to look professional.

If you use SeedProd to build your blog, you can set these brand choices globally in the theme builder so they apply to every page automatically.

4. Install Essential WordPress Plugins

Now that your blog is set up, let’s add the tools that keep it running well. WordPress plugins add features and functionality to your site, a lot like apps for your blog.

With over 64,000 options, finding the right ones is daunting. That’s why I’ve put together a short list of essential plugins every blog should have:

1. All in One SEO (AIOSEO)

AIOSEO WordPress SEO plugin interface in the WordPress dashboard

This plugin helps you optimize your blog for search engines like Google. That means more people can find your content when they search online.

AIOSEO guides you through the SEO process, even if you’re a beginner. It helps you choose the right keywords, create SEO-friendly titles, and more.

2. MonsterInsights

Want to know how many people are visiting your blog and what they’re reading? MonsterInsights lets you connect your blog to Google Analytics and see all your key traffic data inside the WordPress dashboard.

You can see which posts are most popular, where your visitors are coming from, and what devices they use. This helps you create content your readers actually want.

3. Sucuri

Sucuri best WordPress security plugins

Security is important for any website, especially if you’re collecting email addresses or other personal information. Sucuri scans for malware, blocks hackers, and protects your site from attacks.

4. Duplicator

Duplicator best WordPress backup plugin

Losing all your hard work because of a technical glitch is something every blogger fears. Duplicator creates backups of your entire website so you can quickly restore it if something goes wrong.

5. WP Rocket

WP Rocket caching plugin for WordPress

Nobody likes a slow website. WP Rocket is a caching plugin that makes your blog load faster, which keeps readers happy and coming back for more.

It also helps improve your SEO, as search engines favor fast-loading sites.

These are just a few of the WordPress plugins available. Check out our list of the best WordPress plugins for more ideas on how to enhance your blog even further.

5. Create Engaging Content

Now that your blog is running, it’s time to fill it with content your readers will love. In my experience, developing some core content pillars is the easiest way to do this.

According to Buffer:

“A content pillar is a key theme or topic you want to focus on in your content and become known to your audience. Most creators have a combination of several pillars that form the foundation of their content strategy.”

Content pillars help you control “what you’re known for” and how people define your content when explaining it to others. They should align with your niche and the interests of your target audience.

Here are a few examples of popular content pillars from successful mom blogs:

  • Parenting Tips: Share advice on discipline, child development, education, or other parenting challenges.
  • Recipes: Quick and easy meals for busy moms, healthy snacks for kids, or special occasion recipes for the whole family.
  • Travel Stories: Share your family adventures, budget-friendly travel tips, or destination guides for family vacations.
  • Personal Essays: Open up about your experiences as a mom, the ups and downs of parenting, or the lessons you’ve learned along the way.

Children’s Privacy and Content Ethics

One thing I’d encourage every new mom blogger to think through early is that your children can’t consent to being on the internet, but you can control how much of them shows up there. A few practical ground rules make this easier to manage.

  • Use first names or nicknames only — avoid full names in post text and photo captions.
  • Think before you post — once something is online, it’s essentially permanent. Ask yourself if your child would be comfortable seeing that content as a teenager.
  • Skip location specifics — sharing that you’re at a school play is fine; naming the school is not.
  • Keep health and behavioral details private — diagnoses, struggles at school, and personal milestones belong to your child, not your blog.

Creating a Content Calendar

Planning your content helps you stay organized and consistent with your posting schedule. It’s like a roadmap: you map out your blog post ideas, set deadlines, and cover all your content pillars.

I use Asana to plan the content for our blog. I include simple fields for the blog title, due date, post type, and status. It’s easy to customize to suit your workflow and keeps everything organized.

Tips for Writing Engaging Blog Posts

Creating a well-designed blog is only half the work. Here are some tips to make your content stand out:

  • Be authentic: Share your personal experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Readers love to connect with real people. Don’t be afraid to show your vulnerability and let your personality shine through your writing.
  • Tell stories: People are naturally drawn to stories. Instead of stating facts, use storytelling to make your posts more engaging and relatable. Share anecdotes, personal experiences, or even funny stories about your kids.
  • Use visuals: Break up your text with eye-catching images, fun videos, or informative infographics. This makes your posts more visually appealing and easier to digest.
  • Use a conversational tone: Write like you’re talking to a friend over coffee. This helps create a warm and inviting atmosphere for your readers.
  • Proofread and edit: Before hitting publish, make sure your blog post is free of errors and easy to read. A polished post shows that you care about your content and your readers.

6. Promote Your Mom Blog

Your blog is live; now it needs readers. Here are the four channels that work best for mom bloggers: social media, email, SEO, and community engagement.

Social Media

Social media is a great way to reach moms who share your interests. With so many platforms, which ones are best for mom bloggers?

Mom blog social media promotion example
  • Facebook: Perfect for joining mom groups, participating in discussions, and sharing your blog posts with a wider audience.
  • Instagram: Great for visually appealing content like photos and short videos. Use Instagram Stories to give your followers a glimpse into your daily life.
  • TikTok: This short-form video platform can be a fun way to showcase your personality, share quick tips, or participate in viral trends. It’s a great way to reach younger audiences.

Pinterest Strategy

Pinterest deserves its own section because it works differently from every other platform and it drives significantly more traffic for mom bloggers as a result.

Unlike Instagram or TikTok, Pinterest is a search engine. People come to it looking for ideas, recipes, parenting tips, and tutorials. Your pins can surface for months or years after you post them, which means the content you create today keeps working for you long after it’s published.

Create vertical pins at 1000x1500px with keyword-rich descriptions that match what your audience searches for. Tools like Tailwind let you schedule pins in batches so you can stay consistent without spending hours on the platform every week.

Email Marketing

Building an email list is one of the highest-return moves a new blogger can make. Email subscribers convert 3-5x better than social followers for affiliate income and sponsored post pitches because you’re talking directly to someone who asked to hear from you.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Choose an email service. Constant Contact, Mailchimp, and Kit (formerly ConvertKit) all have free tiers that work well for new bloggers.
  2. Install an opt-in form plugin. Place a signup form in your sidebar, at the end of posts, or as a popup. SeedProd’s opt-in blocks make it easy to add these anywhere on your site without coding.
  3. Create a simple lead magnet. Offer a printable, a checklist, or a resource list in exchange for an email address. Even a simple “5-Day Meal Plan for Picky Eaters” PDF can grow your list fast.

Once you have subscribers, see our guide on how to grow your email list for tactics that keep it building.

To make your newsletters irresistible, try:

  • Personalizing your emails with the reader’s name
  • Keeping your subject lines short and catchy
  • Including a clear call to action (like clicking a link to read a blog post)
  • Sharing personal anecdotes or behind-the-scenes glimpses into your life

SEO Strategies

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s a fancy way of saying, “making your blog appear in search results.” This involves using relevant keywords, optimizing page titles and descriptions, and building backlinks from other websites.

If SEO sounds overwhelming, don’t worry. Here’s a WordPress search engine optimization guide that can help you get started.

Community Engagement

Don’t be afraid to get involved in online mom communities. Join Facebook groups, participate in forums, or comment on other blogs and start guest posting.

Promote your mom blog in forums and online communities

You can even join relevant subreddits like r/beyondthebump and share your parenting expertise with other parents.

7. Monetize Your Mom Blog

Turning your passion project into a source of income is the goal. Monetizing your mom blog can cover your blogging expenses, supplement your income, or, over time, replace a full-time salary.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to make money blogging. Let’s look at the most popular methods.

Income Expectations: What’s Realistic

Before diving into specific strategies, it’s worth setting realistic expectations. Most bloggers don’t earn money in month one and that’s normal.

Here’s a rough timeline based on what’s typical for mom bloggers who publish consistently:

StageTimelineTypical Monthly Income
Early stageMonths 1-6$0-$100 (building audience)
First incomeMonths 6-12$100-$500 (first affiliate commissions, small ad revenue)
Consistent revenueMonths 12-24$500-$2,000+ (multiple income streams active)
Established blog24+ months$2,000-$10,000+ (ads, affiliates, sponsored posts, digital products)

The bloggers who reach the higher end of that range are posting consistently, building an email list from day one, and treating their blog like a business from the start.

FTC Disclosure Requirements

Before you post your first affiliate link, understand this: the FTC requires bloggers to disclose any financial relationship with brands or products they recommend. This includes affiliate links, sponsored posts, and gifted products.

The disclosure needs to be clear and conspicuous — not buried in fine print. A simple statement at the top of any post with affiliate links works: “This post contains affiliate links. If you click and purchase, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.”

Failing to disclose can result in FTC penalties. It also damages reader trust, which is harder to recover than rankings. For full guidance, see the FTC’s endorsement guide.

Affiliate Marketing

With affiliate marketing, you share products or services you love with your readers and include a special link. When someone clicks your link and makes a purchase, you earn a commission.

It’s a win-win: your readers discover useful products, and you get rewarded for your recommendation.

To make money blogging with affiliate marketing, join affiliate programs like ShareASale and choose products you already use to promote.

Because you trust and are familiar with each product, your audience will sense your passion and personal observations.

Expert Tip

Blair Williams

“In my experience, it is better to recommend a few quality products that you believe in than a huge list of products that you know nothing about.”

Blair Williams, Founder of Pretty Links.

Sponsored Posts

Companies are always looking for ways to reach their target audience, and your mom blog might be the right platform.

Sponsored content is a form of advertising where you get paid to write about a brand or product. You can share your honest opinion while getting compensated for your time and influence.

Display Advertising

Display advertising can be a straightforward way to earn passive income if you’re getting good traffic to your blog.

Mom blog display ads example

You can sign up for ad networks like Google AdSense, which will display ads on your blog. You earn money whenever someone clicks on an ad.

Digital Downloads

Share your knowledge and expertise by creating and selling digital products like ebooks, printables, templates, or online courses.

This is a great way to monetize your skills and provide value to your readers. You can even offer exclusive discounts to your email subscribers.

Expert Tip

“Compared with selling physical products, digital downloads are a breeze. There’s no need to keep track of inventory, no running out of stock, no need to hire storage space or workers to manage it, and no shipping and handling.”

What to Expect in Your First 3 Months

The first 90 days will feel slow. That’s normal. Here’s a realistic picture of what to aim for:

MonthFocusGoals
Month 1FoundationBlog set up, 8-10 posts published, social profiles created
Month 2GrowthApply to first affiliate program, publish 4+ more posts, start building email list
Month 3MonetizationApply to a display ad network, pitch your first sponsored post

The bloggers who skip ahead to monetization in month one almost always stall out. The ones who build audience first — posts, email list, community — are the ones still publishing in year two.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money can you make from a mom blog?

Income varies widely depending on your niche, consistency, and monetization mix. Early-stage bloggers (months 1-6) typically earn $0-$100/month. Bloggers who publish consistently for 12-24 months and build an email list alongside their audience can reach $500-$2,000+ per month through affiliate marketing, display ads, and sponsored posts.

At the established level (24+ months), $2,000-$10,000+/month is realistic with multiple income streams active. The blogs that reach that range treat it like a business from the start.

How long does it take to make money from a mom blog?

Most mom bloggers earn their first income between months 6-12 — typically a small affiliate commission or their first ad network payment. Consistent revenue (enough to matter) usually starts around the 12-18 month mark for bloggers who publish at least 2-3 times per week and actively promote their content.

Bloggers who build an email list from the beginning tend to reach that point faster, because email converts better than social media for both affiliate links and sponsored post pitches.

Do I need to disclose affiliate links on my mom blog?

Yes, the FTC requires a clear disclosure on any post that contains affiliate links, sponsored content, or gifted products. The disclosure must be visible — typically at the top of the post — not buried in a footer or tucked at the bottom of a long page.

A simple sentence works: “This post contains affiliate links. If you click and purchase, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.” Skipping this step is both a legal risk and a trust issue with your readers.

What is the best niche for a mom blog?

The best niche is the one you can write about consistently for years — not just the one with the highest search volume. That said, niches with strong affiliate product opportunities (parenting products, family travel, homeschooling, budget living) tend to monetize faster than pure lifestyle content.

A focused niche outperforms a broad one almost every time. “Minimalist parenting for toddlers” builds a more loyal, monetizable audience than “general mom blog.” The tighter the niche, the faster you become the go-to resource for that audience.
